Welcome to the Yale College Chess Club!
Yale can boast the oldest college chess club in the country, having sent a delegate to the First National Chess Congress in the 1850s, and as a part of the original CHYP league formed in 1892. Competitively, we have had great results in the past, including winning the 1987 Pan-American tournament two years after Joel Benjamin (yes, that Joel Benjamin) graduated from Yale, and more recently, winning the Columbia-Harvard-Yale-Cornell Ivy Tournament in 2007.
But competition is only one part of what we do. In keeping with Yale's long history of community involvement, the chess club conducts weekly chess tutoring at local public middle schools America On Board. Owing to the success of our current initiative, we are in the process of expanding our community service program in the coming months.
So come visit, play, and tutor with us! We are open to all Yale students, faculty, staff, and affiliates and want to hear from you, regardless of your chess expertise. What we really care about is promoting chess as the great game it is.
